A downloadable puzzlebook

Lineon is a book of paper-and-pen puzzles for one player or a cooperative group by Blaz Urban Gracar.

It separates itself from similar puzzles like Sudoku, Picross or Connect-The-Dots by telling a story. It is a story about lethal chases and frantic battles – about forgiveness and forgetfulness – and about saving a little girl’s life.

All is expressed by drawing lines between points.

Lineon is available as a PDF and as a browser app adaptation.

You can print the PDF and play it on paper: DOWNLOAD

Or you can play the browser app adaptation by Igor Zuber (you'll need to read the rules and story in the PDF): PLAY

Lineon is a series of puzzles to solve.

You solve puzzles by drawing straight lines between points on the Grid. These lines represent movements of Friends and Regressors. Your main goal is to keep Friends safe - which means you'll need to maneuver them past the deadly Regressors towards the Exit Point.

Lineon is a work in progress. Currently at version 0.7.

Lineon is my attempt at implementing classic platforming style of video games into a paper'n'pen game environment. The possibility of drawing lines in any desirable direction reminds me of the intuitive way how you control and move characters in games like Super MarioCeleste and Cuphead.

The story of saving a little girl's life is closely related to something that's currently happening in my life - so the process of creating the game is also sort of a therapy and a prayer for me.

In the process of making Lineon, I got acquainted with Igor Zuber, a kind soul from Poland and a talented programmer, who ported the game from the book into a web browser app, expanding the Lineon experience. Thank you, Igor!

If you like what you see and play, please support the project by following its development, sharing the word about it and providing feedback! Let's make this game a great one :)

Lineon is also accompanied by a soundtrack.

[edit: the PDF has the rules in it. You can't really play the browser game without reading the PDF]

Are there actual rules for this game written anywhere? I cannot imagine how someone is supposed to learn how to play from the pdf if it's not very clearly spelled out what you can and can't do and what the iconography means.

I can't tell if I don't understand the game, or if I do understand it but have somehow not found a solution to puzzle 1.7 in the browser adaptation. It seems like I need one of the people to reach the door without touching any bombs and that lines, walls, and other points cannot be crossed. But it seems impossible? I'm assuming that I'm wrong about something but .....

The rules are very thorough in my opinion, what needs more elaboration? Even with the browser adaptation, the stated goal for 1.7 (which also shows they’re definitely not bombs) should already be enough with the direct feedback.

When I played the browser adaptation of the game it just dumped me into puzzles with no explanation of anything beyond trial and error. I didn't know what "resources" were and thought they were bombs until I downloaded the PDF which has the actual rules in it. At that point it was clear.

I don't mind the browser adaptation assuming you have the PDF, I just wish it said that and that the rules to the game are in the PDF.

Hi Ben, I appreciate your comments.

Your first comment mentioned the PDF, so I thought you had already looked at it and I was confused how you haven't found the rules within it. As for your second comment, the link to the browser app on this Itch page is accompanied by the text "... you can play the browser app adaptation by Igor Zuber (still using the PDF for rules and story)..." - I'm not sure how I could say that the PDF is needed for the rules more explicitly. Or have you accessed the browser app link somewhere else? In any case, thank you very much for trying the game :) Hope you'll have fun with it now that you have access to the rules.

One of the most incredible things about both writing rulebooks and classroom teaching is how often people can get confused about things I thought were crystal clear - or even thought were so obvious I didn't even realize it needed to be said at all. In this case, I interpreted "still using the PDF for rules and story" as meaning the adaptation uses the same rules and story as the PDF. What about "you'll need to read the rules and story in the PDF".

Ah noted, thanks, changed it on the Itch page :)

This is such a neat system. I love how the puzzle solutions feel like a story without the rules being too contrived.

Thank you woofmao! Glad to hear you enjoyed it :)

Are there any plans to finish this at some point, or have you just moved on? Just curious.

I love the system, so I plan to return to it in some form in the future, however, I need to find a way to streamline the rules. But yeah, I really like how the puzzles feel to solve, so I want to return. Can't say when and how.

beautiful little game!

I was wondering if it was possible to have a "puzzles-only" version of the game,

That is to say, a downloadable document with only the puzzles, no explanation, no solution, and maybe two or more puzzles per page? that'd save a lot of paper, don't you think?

Hi Bruno, thank you for your comment! :)

All puzzles are available in the image format on this link:

You can print them out this way! Let me know if you have any troubles with it.
